EARTH DAY 2013 - APRIL 22.

LET'S CELEBRATE!
Send an e-mail to gogreen@gmail.com to invite a GoGreen volunteer to YOUR classroom!
So many ways to be kind to our Earth ...

- separate your waste in school and/or at home (compost organic waste, sort plastics/papers/aluminum)

go on a nature walk (eg. on the school's nature trail)

- study about recycling (ask for GoGreen's play recycling truck)

watch a puppet show about waste decomposition (ask for GoGreen's puppets and props)

- do green crafts (ideas here)

- play the recycling scavenger hunt (Sprout took some photos of green spots in Clemson. Find on the map where the photos were taken! You can see the map and photos here. )

- play the "oil game" (game handbook and video)

- discuss the "The Story of Stuff" (see videos here)

- read books about environmental issues (available at our library)

-check your ecological footprint here!

Feed the Worms! for me, for you!

Thanks to all of the kids that helped me and my team collect compost at our last Go Green Wednesday at Clemson Elementary. We collected more than 20 gallons of compost (uneaten lettuce, apple cores, carrots...). Instead of going to a landfill and becoming harmful to our environment, these leftovers (which may be any food and vegetable waste) will become food for worms, and eventually food for me, Sprout, as nutritious rich compost which will help me grow healthy! This in turn eventually becomes food for you in the lunchroom!

Can you kids imagine what 20 gallons is? Each of your milk jugs at home (the big ones) is a gallon. 20 of these a day means (20 x 5) 100 gallons a week, and (20 x 180) 3,600 gallons a school year. Try to picture that many gallons in your refrigerator? Impossible.

So kids instead of making garbage :( we are completing a cycle of life :) Don't you think we should do this everyday?

Sprout has spoken ---

I got a message out on the Morning Announcement this week!
Read it bellow:

A: I’m sad Halloween is over!
B: I know. And I’m even sadder that my Jack-o-Lanterns has started to rot.
A: Mine is very shriveled, too. I think it’s time to put it into the compost.

B: Put it where?
A: Into the compost… It’s a pile of vegetable waste we have at home. In our compost pile vegetables break down and turn into rich soil. Maybe you should start one at your house. If you compost your raw vegetables, you’ll have much less trash is your trash-can!
B: Yes, I’ll have to think about that. I’ve heard that the Ms. Hardin’s Intermediate Multi-age class is collecting vegetable scraps and will observe how it decomposes.
A: I’d like to see that, too! Composting is great way to go green!
